Unheavenly Bodies transforms a classic pair of cowboy boots into a painted altar of contradiction. sacred, sensual, and charged with tension. Inspired by the duality of sin and sanctity, this piece confronts the eroticism embedded in both religious iconography and BDSM visual language. Two fallen angels kneel in submission as cherubs raise their whips. It begs of us to ask the question; are they being punished, or set free? The scene is deliberately ambiguous, playing with the power dynamics of holiness and desire, pain and ecstasy.
The boots are painted using high-grade acrylic leather paints to preserve the flexibility and wearability of the leather, allowing the work to be lived in or displayed. Each surface was carefully prepped and sealed to ensure durability without compromising detail. The choice of cowboy boots as the canvas nods to both Americana and androgyny. masculine in form, femme in styling, and entirely genderless in impact.
Unheavenly Bodies explores themes central to my practice: the erotic and the divine, submission as autonomy, and the body as both subject and symbol. It’s part of an ongoing inquiry into what it means to wear art that’s meant to be felt, not just seen.

Gentle Cleaning:
For routine cleaning, use a soft cloth or brush to wipe away dirt and dust. If necessary, use a damp cloth with mild soap and water. Avoid soaking the leather.Avoid Harsh Chemicals:
Do not use bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, or any harsh chemicals, as they can damage the paint and leather.Drying:
Let your boots air dry naturally after cleaning. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators, heaters, or hairdryers, as they can cause the paint to crack or the leather to shrink.Conditioning the Leather:
Use a leather conditioner to keep the leather supple and prevent it from drying out. Avoid applying the conditioner directly to the painted areas; instead, focus on the unpainted leather. Always test on a small area first.Avoid Water Exposure:
While the leather itself may handle some moisture, excess water or rain can cause the paint to fade or peel over time. Protect your boots with a waterproof spray designed for leather before exposure to wet conditions.Storage:
Store your boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the paint. Use boot trees or stuff them with tissue paper to maintain shape when not in use.Polishing:
If desired, use a neutral leather polish on the unpainted areas only. Avoid applying polish on painted sections to prevent any discoloration or damage to the artwork.Protective Coating:
A light, leather-specific protective spray can be used to shield the painted areas from dirt and scuff marks. Be sure to test the spray on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire boot.
